You’ll laugh when you read this, it's so simple. But in this day and age with a lack of time we sometimes go with the easiest option available. However if your visiting my site you, like me obviously like to make your own teaching resources at the best price possible.

Felt boards sell you ridiculous prices and I think the first one I brought I paid something like $49 (cough, cough and splutter) and it was smaller than a piece of A3 paper. I couldn't afford to buy the size I really wanted. But depending on your access to materials you can make yours for a fraction of the price. If you already have a board you can use … you’re halfway there. Anyway below you’ll find basic instruction on how to make your own felt board - you are welcome to use this information at your own discretion i.e. I take no responsibility for your work or end result.

To complete your felt board, you will need:

  • Felt 5cm larger all the way around than your board - either our sticky back felt or any other piece of felt. I find that a felt board a bit smaller than a poster is very practical, but still gives a nice big surface to work with.
  • Board - I use Core flute - just like the real-estate signs are made of as its light, easy to fold in half if your want to make a really big board but worried about storage. And its very cost effective. You could even just ring your local real estate office and see if they have one they don’t use any more. In reality you could use almost anything as the board e.g. heavy card board, corrugated cardboard, plywood...
  • Glue - Only if you’re not using our sticky back felt
  • Scissors

Our sticky back felt is perfect for making felt boards as you can make your board and use it straight away. If your using ordinary felt make sure to spread the glue evenly and it will need time to dry overnight. (Just keep watch for any air bubbles)

Instructions:

  1. Layout your piece of felt on a flat surface and centre your piece of board on top
  2. Mark the corners as shown in the picture below and then cut across these mark lines
  3. Ok repeat step 1 so your board is centred on top of the felt again
  4. Peel back the top 5cm off your sticky back felt (or smear on your glue to this section) and then firmly fold this top 5cm section down over your board - this side will be the back.
  5. Doing this top section first secures the felt and gives it a bit more stability as you turn over the felt
and board, ready to secure the front. Starting at the top work your way down in sections so that you can keep your felt smooth and firmly positioned. (This is where sticky back felt is ideal - it secures instantly but can also be repositioned if you get into any trouble)
  6. Just the sides to go - turn your board back over and folding the sides over and firmly smooth them
    down.

Optional Finishing:
You can add fabric tape over the edges of the felt on the back side of your board for a smart look. And I suggest this if you're using the ordinary felt and glue method, if you’re using sticky back felt, fabric tape will be purely for appearances. So the choice is yours.
Punch 2 holes at the top of your board and add a string handle
